What To Do At Home During COVID-19 Quarantine

Well, no matter how the virus got here, what political party you are in or where you live you probably are facing some sort of quarantine due to COVID-19. Whether or not it is government mandated with business and school closures in your area, you most likely are finding yourself at home during this time and you’re running out of things to do! Here’s a quick list of things to help you feel less boredom!
Binge-watch
The beauty of this lockdown is that it’s not associated with any storms or power outages making wifi a gift from wherever you get your blessings from. Although the virus has pushed back MANY cinema openings companies like Disney+ are releasing movies like Frozen 2 and Onward EARLY on their platform. I believe many subscription-based companies like Hulu or Netflix will follow suit. But if not, pair that with Amazon Prime shows and al those vague Roku and free streaming apps you should be able to find SOMETHING to get sucked into. Just mak sure you check out Tiger King on Netflix. Rewatch an old favorite, get scared shitless (you probably stocked enough toilet paper for this) from horror shows or get all sapped into yet another romantic comedy. The possibilities are endless. Here’s a list of the top 15 educational tv shows for kids that will definitely keep your littles entertained! Literally, if we were somehow in quarantine for the rest of the year you wouldn’t even get through a quarter of all of these services offerings.
Learn Something
With kiddos at home, it’s yet to be decided if they will have to do online learning mandated from the school or not, but learning should not stop that they’re home, nor should learning stop if you’re an adult! We Are Teachers and Swing Education got to work creating a huge list of resources of online learning for kids while they’re home, but if you’re looking for some educational games try PBS Kids or FunBrain! If you have older children at home these museums offer virtual tours, Virtual Sites offers 300+ virtual tours of travel locations and World Tour 360 offers a bunch of 360 views of random top travel destinations. For any age you can find a million how-to videos on Youtube or Skillshare! There’s also a variety of educational kid’s tv shows your kids can get lost in!
Get Crafty
Getting artsy or crafty at home during this time is SO important. Pinterest is honestly THE BEST place to find instructions and inspiration for tons of activities. Maybe paint or draw a new piece for your home, craft a new dish in the kitchen or sew your new favorite wardrobe piece. The possibilities are endless! Maybe pick up a new embroidery set or maybe even paint set off Amazon to skip the store and get you started on something ASAP! (I purchased the embroidery one and LOVE it)
Spring Clean
Since you’re home this is a great time to get your Spring cleaning done. Take it a bit further and go through your junk drawers and organize too! This is also a great way to clean any COVID germs out of your house! If you want some AMAZING Mrs. Meyers products you can use THIS LINK to get a FREE five-piece bundle! Catch up on laundry (finally) and even get rid of old clothes that don’t fit! Maybe even take the time to redecorate and make your home a place you really love being these next couple of weeks. I’m not one to tell you how to parent, but having your kids clear through their own room is a great way for them to take part of the action and have some responsibility too!
Sell All Of Your Stuff
With the mail service still running and the amount of Facebook yardsale sites up you can sell almost anything. Poshmark and Mercari are great online sites to list your items on and Facebook Marketplace is great for all the other things. You can even utilize thing like shipping, porch pick up, video run-throughs of product and Paypal payments to cut down on person to person contact. You can sell books, movies, furniture, clothes, decor and more. Turn that into cash since you’re not even using these items and you have the time to answer messages and actually sell it.
Get Outside
There is a lot of conflicting advice out there of who, how many and how much you should come in contact with others, but no one can argue that open-air is bad for you. To avoid park surfaces, venture out to hiking trails, local parks, state parks, open-air museums, outdoor spaces and national parks. Stay within your family unit and limit contact, yes, but getting fresh air has been proven to do good for your immune system. If all else fails, utilize your yard if the weather is fair. Maybe even get your yearly garden prep in, work on opening your pool or build an outside fort for your kids to use for years to come.
Practice Self-Care
After a long winter being stuck indoors is going to do a doozie on your mindset. Try out a new facemask, manicure or bath bomb. But for the love, do not color your hair with box dye that you’ll regret or home cut your own bangs… Maybe even get lost in a book or magazine. Amazon has Kindle Subscriptions and Audible Subscriptions but also low-cost magazine subscriptions. They also set MANY kid’s and youth books to $0 to rent to read or listen to! You could also order in a new bullet journal or planner to get your life a little more in order. I personally love all the health and beauty products that come in Causebox and FabFitFun boxes! Lastly, if you’re finding yourself needing to fix your acrylic nails with all the salons closed try this kit from KISS. It worked wonders for me!
Digitally Clean Up
Take this time to clear through old photos from your phone or back them up to a cloud. Go deep into your computer and clean out old files you no longer need and then empty your recycling bin. While you’re at it, update your computer and phone too. Delete old apps you no longer use and FINALLY unsubscribe to all those emails that you never read. If you have a moment, making a list of all your usernames and passwords could be a great way to finally be organized digitally too. Maybe even go one step further and go through your Facebook and Instagram friends lists and delete all those people you’ve been debating about. Possibly respond to all the messages you have put off too. Lastly, if you have any reoccurring subscriptions you keep forgetting to cancel - do so. You can easily find which ones are billing you by taking a peek at your statement. While you’re doing that you can double-check for any discrepancies, and review your credit score.
Plan Travel
Yes, you may not have an idea of WHEN you’ll be going on a trip, but that may be half the fun. Putting together some itineraries will take the strain off of planning your trip later and may even give you something to daydream about. If you do decide to book your trip now you’ll be getting a heck of a deal guaranteed. Check out the TRAVEL section of the blog for some ideas of where to go!
Get The List Done
Do you have a “Honey Do” list that’s been growing or a list of things you’ve been putting off? Now is the time to get them done! Remodel the bathroom, repaint the kid’s room and finally hang the tv on the wall. You’ll feel so much better after this quarantine is over if you got big projects done and over with during it.
Get In The Kitchen
Try out a new recipe for dinner or maybe even search Pinterest for a new snack or dessert you can make. Try to use up all your weekly produce by throwing it into a smoothie! And if all else fails, try out that new adult beverage from the store down the street or play bartender and learn to make your favorite drink yourself!
Bring Some Outside Life In
No, I don’t mean invite people over - I mean bring some living plant life indoors! I love to order online from Lowes, or support a small business and order plants from Pigment or the monthly succulent box from Succulent Studios ($ off coupon codes linked!). Just something small to care for and help thrive can really help with your mental state during this time! Plants also help clean and purify the air inside your home which has been proven to help you breathe better and also sleep better if they’re in your bedroom! Consider a snake plant style succulent if you have a knack for killing plants or opt for a string of pearls if you’re looking for a challenge! Just remember not to overwater your plants during this time. Typically all plants are on a daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly watering schedule that can easily be found online!
Enjoy Yourself
I know this one may seem a bit strange but go with it. You only have one life. You may be facing a financial strain from being off work or a mental strain from being stuck inside with your kiddos, but you are alive and well. You won’t have two weeks off work again soon (or maybe forever) and your kids are only this age once! Soak up this time and use it for good. Just having a positive mindset about this whole thing can change the outcome of your quarantine period! Embrace it. Be safe. Stay Sane. Good luck!
